Over 18 – A Documentary about Porn

Canadian Documentary Seeks to Talk about Kids and Porn

On Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 at 6:30PM, the North Okanagan – Shuswap District Parents Advisory Council will be hosting a free public screening of Over 18, a documentary about pornography produced by Canadian charity, Hope for the Sold. The screening will take be at the SALMAR Classic Theatre in Salmon Arm.

The documentary tackles an issue that many people would rather ignore; the effects of pornography on children and youth. The documentary follows the true story of a boy who became addicted to pornography at the age of nine while playing on his computer in his family’s living room. The film has several interviews with experts from around the world as well as people who are still active in the porn industry today.

In an interview with CBC, Jared Brock, founder of Hope for the Sold and the film’s director said, “Ninety per cent of boys under the age of 18 have looked at porn and 60 per cent of girls… The stuff that they’re accessing isn’t the Playboy that the previous generation saw – breasts in a magazine. It’s body-punishing sex.”

The statistics are truly staggering. 9 of 10 boys view pornography, with the average age of exposure being just 12 years old. But it’s not just a male issue – 60% of girls having seen porn by age 18, and 57% of girls and 83% of boys have seen group sex online.

In October 2016, Over 18 was screened at Parliament Hill in Ottawa and was co-hosted by MPs from all five parties. MPs in Canada are hoping to get legislation passed to see meaningful age verification for pornographic material online.

Please RSVP by emailing sd83dpac@gmail.com or by registering at Event Brite.

2018 Kindergarten / French Immersion Registration

Do you have a child who will be starting kindergarten in September 2018? Welcome!

We just wanted to make everyone aware that the kindergarten registration date, typically held in April of each year, is being moved forward and is being held in October instead. This year registration for kindergarten September 2018 will be on October 2, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at elementary schools throughout the district. Please bring your child’s birth certificate, care card and proof of residency.

Not sure which school your child will attend? Contact SD83 Operations Department: 250-832-9415

Why has the date been moved up?

• more equitable registration (no need for line-ups, all Oct. 2 registrations considered equal)
• allows the school district to have additional time for planning

What if I register my child after October 2/17?

After October 2 the time and date of registration will be recorded and that will be used to determine placement IF catchment area schools are full.

French Immersion Registration

If you are interested in registering your child for early French Immersion (Kindergarten & Grade 1) please FIRST register your child at your catchment area school and then SECOND call or go to Bastion Elementary to pre-register for French Immersion, where you will receive an information package.

An Early French Immersion information session, and possible registration depending on numbers, will be held on November 30 at Bastion Elementary at 7 p.m.
For those interested in late French Immersion (Grade 6) an information meeting, again with possible registration depending on numbers, will be held on March 6 at 7 p.m. at Shuswap Middle School.

Questions or concerns about French Immersion? Please contact Isabelle Gervais at 250-832-3741.
